giant blanket knittingWell, I did it! I finished my very first giant, mega, extreme knitting project. I made those huge PVC pipe knitting needles I talked about earlier and I knit a very large merino wool top roving blanket. It was no easy feat. I was using muscles I didn’t even know I had and I even broke out in a sweat. It actually felt like exercise…..like a decent work out. I’m pretty satisfied with the final results. In fact, I’ve decided I enjoyed knitting the blanket enough so I could sell these conversation pieces. The first photo I put on Facebook got a lot of attention and there were several doubters who thought my picture was photo shopped. I assured them that it really was me in that bed knitting with giant knitting needles are wool!! I still have a lot to learn. I was told I would get a king sized blanket out of 10 pounds of wool but I only got half that size. I’m thinking that maybe I should have divided the wool into two sections to get twice the blanket.   4. Wow! I love the blanket you made. It looks so cozy. I have never seen knitting needles so huge. Where do you buy them? And where do you buy the special yarn? Is there a name for this kind of yarn?

  7. There’s a question I’ve always wanted to ask about these giant blankets: do they pill with time? I get the idea there’s a good chance of that happening, because in essence this is knitting with roving (no twist) as opposed to yarn (with twist)… It looks gorgeous, though! Goes so well with the rest of the decor 🙂

    1. I’ve been told they do. I have one I keep in an upstairs loft that doesn’t get much traffic. I look at it more as decor/conversation piece/work of art more than a functional, everyday, useful blanket. Thanks for stopping by!!

  9. This is such a great idea! I’m going to college in the fall and I’m going to need one of these! Was it an expensive project?? I see you can get one at Free People for $900!! Hopefully this is a less expensive DIY.

    1. It’s about $100-$200 just for the materials but if you made a smaller size and half the thickness (which I recommend to keep the weight down) you could make it for less. Best of luck to you!! 💗

  12. That is amazing! I did arm knitting last year (very awkward when someone knocks at the door halfway through a row!) and love the look and feel of the large stitches, but your blanket is something else – just gorgeous!!! Where do you find wool big enough though? Xxxx
